To carry out the creation of the 3rd Medical Science, research and projects that are required to develop East-West Medical Science, participating in International Joint Research as a collaboration center of traditional medicine research of WHO collaboration centre for traditional medicine.

East-West Medical Research Institute (EWMRI) was established in February 1971, for the purpose of mutual complementary blending of eastern medicine and western medicine, so that each side's limitations can be overcome by creating the 3rd field in the medical sciences. By looking at the institute's past achievements such as opening East-West Medical Center, hosting World Congress of Scientific Research, producing 'Interferon' for the first time in Korea, concluding an agreement on research partnership with Italian National Research Council, being appointed as WHO collaborating centre for Traditional Medicine, and interchanging with the Reflex Therapy Center of USSR National Health Care, it can be concluded that the institute has been the building blocks of Kyung Hee foundation's medical schools, and the Mecca of clinical research.
EWMRI has hosted several large-scale International Western-Oriental Medicine Symposiums. Especially since 1996, research projects, research report, WHO internship training, and medical seminars have been actively supported. In October 2001, which was the 30th anniversary of Kyung Hee University Medical Center, the World Congress with the theme of 'collaboration of Eastern and Western Medicine in the 21st century' took place. Participated by 47 scholars from 7 countries, the World Congress was a great success.
Recently, a large amount of expenditures are put into the colleges such as Vision 2000 Project, collaborating research of industry and academic world, Korean Science Foundation, and Korea Science and Engineering Foundation, and Korea Research Foundation to accelerate research projects. Especially, Korea Research Foundation is a large scale project that has excelled institute's development and is expected to have abundant scientific outcomes.
EWMRI is now cooperating with Graduate School of East-West Medical Science by interchanging information and attending research projects. Graduate School is mainly focused on basic research, while institute is on clinical research to propel Oriental Medicine's science and to develop a new-medicine to be internationally competitive.
Kyung Hee University has a gigantic medical complex, which is composed with College of Medicine, Oriental Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing Science, and Graduate School of East-West Medical Science. Especially, Kyung Hee's College of Oriental Medicine is recognized as the mecca of Oriental Medicine. Our institute certainly believes that pursuing harmonization between East and West medicine from each field is the turning point of history of the medical science.
When all members join together and continue research activities with constructive cooperation under creative endeavors, our institute will become the cradle of East-West Medical Science. We will devote ourselves to accomplish it.
